On the Trail of Cultural Heritage; The “Memory of Tradition” project is an exhibition organized to celebrate the centennial of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Turkey in 2024. The exhibition includes ceramic cups used in Turkish coffee culture and Japanese tea culture. This exhibition was planned with the important purpose of preserving cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations.
The works produced by ceramic artists from both countries in mutual interaction highlight the rich cultural heritage and crafts of both countries. In addition to increasing cultural exchange and artistic cooperation between artists, the “Memory of Tradition” exhibition also contributes to today’s cultural relations by recalling the deep historical past between the two countries.

The Memory of Tradition: A Journey Among Traditions
Art has built invisible communication bridges between societies throughout history and has been the most important tool that allows cultural heritage to interact with each other. The exhibition ‘Memory of Tradition’ once again reflects these deep-rooted interactions with the universal language of art. Japanese and Turkish ceramic art is deeply rooted in both societies. The idea behind this exhibition is based on another similar tradition of the two cultures. This tradition is cups, one of the important tools of social rituals that are similar in both cultures. The Japanese and Turkish artists in the exhibition have established an intercultural artistic dialogue through these cups, which carry the similar rituals of both countries.
The tradition of drinking coffee, which has been accepted as a ritual that strengthens social ties in Turkish society for centuries, reflects Turkish hospitality and friendship with the saying ‘a cup of coffee has forty years of memory’ passed down from generation to generation. The Japanese artists in the Memory of Tradition exhibition have interpreted Turkish cups in line with their unique artistic approach by analysing the cultural values carried by the object as well as its functional features. In Japanese tea ceremonies, teachings that create acceptance and awareness of the natural cycle of life are shared with individuals. In these ceremonies, where a common life philosophy specific to the culture is shared with spiritual approaches, tea pots are not only a beverage tool, but also a meditation object. Turkish ceramic artists have analysed the meanings and symbols attached to the traditional teacups used in tea ceremonies in Japanese culture and reflected them in their works.
The ‘Memory of Tradition’ exhibition is the product of a cultural and social fusion that brings Japanese and Turkish artists together in an artistic event. This meaningful event is inspired by the celebration of the century-long friendship between Japan and Turkey in 2024 and reflects the wish of the two countries to deepen their mutual artistic and cultural ties. May we celebrate many more 100 years of peace, love and art.
